An Idaho district court judge could rule as soon as today on Attorney General Raúl Labrador’s latest challenge to a ballot initiative that seeks to end Idaho’s closed party primary elections and create a system of ranked-choice voting in general elections. Both sides were in Ada County District Court on yesterday for a summary judgment hearing.

A grand jury indicted a man on first-degree murder charges for allegedly killing a fellow inmate at the Idaho State Correctional Center. 33 year old James M. Johnson faces charges for allegedly killing 45-year-old Milo Warnock in December 2023. Johnson could face death or life in prison if he is convicted.

Chad and Lori Daybell’s former house in Idaho has a new owner. The doomsday author was convicted earlier this year in three murders, including two kids from Arizona. Their Idaho home, which was acquired by Daybell’s defense attorney during this case, went up for sale after his trial. SJ Healing Crossroads plans to take down the house and turn the property into a site of peace, healing and hope. Chad Daybell was sentenced to death and is currently one of nine people on Idaho’s death row.

Educators working in rural or underserved schools in Idaho have until Sept. 30 to apply for the Rural and Underserved Educator Incentive program. The program, created by the Idaho Legislature in 2022, offers up to $12,000 over four years to help eligible educators repay student loans.

Construction continues on the Idaho National Guard building near I-84 and Highway 93 in Jerome County. It’s one of 9 regional readiness centers in the state. It’s part of a plan to condense 23 state facilities. In this case Jerome and Twin Falls will move into this location to include the 116th Cavalry brigade, the 116th engineer Battalion and the 145th support battalion. The 23 million dollar project is expected to be complete sometime next year.

The mandatory evacuation order for Croy Creek and Rock Creek Canyons in Blaine County due to the Glendale wildfire has been lifted. Officials say homeowners can return while the area remains closed for all non-residents.

SPORTS

Despite only winning one game in 2023, the Jerome Tigers enter the 2024 season off a win. Their lone victory came in the last week of the regular season against Mountain Home, and they gained a lot of experience in the 2023 season with a lot of young players getting a lot of playing time. Rich Bishop returns for his second season as head coach of the Tigers after 24 years spent as both an assistant coach and head coach at Kimberly. After starting six games as a freshman at QB, Kale Bingham will return to his duties behind center and Coach Bishop is excited to have him back.

Entering his third year as the head coach of Kimberly High School's football team, Joe Dille is eager to lead a talented and experienced squad into the upcoming season. With four years of previous experience as an assistant coach at Kimberly, Dille knows his team well and is supported by a strong coaching staff. The Bulldogs will rely on a solid group of returning seniors. Offensively, Kimberly plans to capitalize on its speed and versatility with a spread offense designed to get their playmakers in space. Defensively, Kimberly will operate primarily out of a 3-4 base but will occasionally shift into a 4-front.

The Vandals women’s soccer team is gearing up to take on two opponents in Idaho this weekend. The team will host UC San Diego today at 6:00 p.m. in the Kibbie Dome. Idaho will then hit the road to face Boise State on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.

From the scoreboards, first for college action. Boise State women's soccer lost to BYU 2-0, last night. The Broncos return to Boise for a home match against the Vandals on Sunday, September 8 at Boas Soccer Complex. The contest is scheduled to kickoff at 1 p.m.

From local high school games, here are some scores. First for boys soccer, it was Sun Valley Community School 7 Bliss 0. Kimberly 1 Filer 0. Wendell 7 Buhl 0. For the Girls, Buhl took the win over Wendell 5 to 0. The Sun Valley Community School 2 Bliss 0.

From the volleyball courts, Hansen downed Castleford 3 to 0. Hagerman 3 Shoshone 0. Dietrich 3 Camas County 0 and Carey took the win over Richfield 3 to 1. It was Oakley 3 Murtaugh 0. Valley for the win over the Sun Valley community school 3 to 0.

To the high school sports schedule first for boys soccer where we find Mountain Home traveling to play Minico. Twin Falls will play Jerome. Burley is on the road to play Wood River. For the girls, Declo will board the bus for Aberdeen. Wood River heads to Burley. Middleton travels to Twin Falls to play Canyon Ridge, the Sun Valley Community School travels to Gooding, Minico goes to Mountain Home while Jerome will cross the bridge to play Twin Falls.
