Athena Miller and Nicholas James the two people who were found guilty of murdering Roger Driesel of Gooding, were sentenced to at least 25 years in prison. The body of the 58 year old victim was found in a shop near his home.
The Lava Fire and Boulder Fire combined this week prompting evacuation orders, road closures and additional firefighting teams to assist with the situation. The combined wildfires to the southwest and west of Lake Cascade have burned through a combined 78,457 acres.
Other fires burning in Idaho include the lightning-caused Wapiti Fire has now consumed 125,429 acres and remains 12% contained. 1,325 personnel are assigned to the fire that started on July 24th in Grandjean.
The Southwest Incident Management Team 4 is helping attack the Chimney Fire that ignited last week. The team set up camp just nine miles outside of Fairfield. There are currently 428 personnel on the ground.
Representatives for the In-n-out burger will appear before the Twin Falls planning and zoning commission Monday to make their case why they should be allowed to operate a proposed restaurant where the Outback Steakhouse is currently located. Next month the commission will also hear an appeal regarding their approval for a Taco Bell drive thru at Carriage Lane and Addison Avenue.
A Rupert man was back in court yesterday facing another felony charge of unlawful killing of a bull moose. 43-year-old Karl Studer now faces six felonies and 15 misdemeanor wildlife crimes committed during the 2023 big game season. Brandon Wilcox, a suspect named in Fish and Game’s probable-cause statement in Studer’s poaching conspiracy case, also appeared.
A Nampa man was indicted on multiple sex charges, including rape and sexual abuse of a minor in Canyon and Ada County. A grand jury indicted 42-year-old Kenneth Ray Dial Jr. on his charges after he allegedly provided alcohol and drugs to two underage girls and propositioned them for sexual acts. Detectives believe there are more victims.
SPORTS
Ever since Jon Helmandollar arrived at Wendell three years ago, the Trojans have been building. They went 2-6 in Helmandollar’s first season at the helm in 2021. 2022 saw improvement, as the Trojans went 4-5 and just missed out on the postseason. Then, last season, Wendell finished 5-5, but advanced to the playoffs for the first time in years. Their postseason journey ended in the opening round with a 42-0 road loss at Bear Lake (now in Class 4A), but the bar has been set. Helmandollar will be forever be grateful to the Class of 2023 for helping Wendell end its playoff drought.
After back-to-back postseason appearances in the 3A ranks, the Wood River Wolverines, under the guidance of Head Coach Shane Carden, are preparing for a year of both challenge and opportunity. With Carden entering his sixth year as head coach, the team is bracing for significant transitions. Key returning players like senior Sully Carter, a versatile TE/DE, and senior Cash Hunter, who contributes as a WR/DB, will be pivotal. Junior Will Adams is expected to take on a critical role at linebacker, stepping into the Mike position with the potential to anchor the defense.
From the local high school scoreboards, first for Boys Soccer, Bliss downed Declo 3 to 1. Filer took the win over Buhl 5 to 0. It was the Sun Valley Community school 3 over Kimberly 0. Wendell outlasted Gooding 3 to 0.
For the girls, it was Buhl 7 Filer 0. The Sun Valley community school outlasted Kimberly 3 to 1. Wendell defeated Gooding 5 to 1.
From volleyball games, Valley outlasted Shoshone 3 to 1. Castleford downed Richfield 3 to 2. Hansen for the win over Camas County 3 to 0. Murtaugh for the win over Grace 3 to 2. It was Rockland 3 Oakley 1.
